Chief Black Hawk is a renowned Indian war chief who fought for the British in the War of 1812. He then fought against European settlers in the territories which are now modern day Illinois and Wisconsin. Black Hawk was not a hereditary chief, but rather a war chief whose success in battle led him to become one of the most feared Indian warriors in American history. To match his solitary success in war, Black Hawk took on a unique hair style in which most of his head was shaved with the remaining tuft dyed bright red and pulled back in one large plume. Perhaps this style was exaggerated over time in various renderings, but it certainly challenges the eccentricity of the various mohawks and bobs created by gender bending mods, punks and Goths of contemporary culture.
